How to install LUTs in Adobe Premiere Pro
Updated · about 5 minutes
Quick answer
In Premiere Pro, select a clip, open Lumetri Color → Creative → Look → Browse… and pick a .cube file from the unzipped download. Set the strength with Intensity. To keep the looks in the menu, copy the .cube files to Adobe's Common/LUTs/Creative folder.
- Works with
- Premiere Pro 2020 and later on Mac and Windows. Older CC releases use the same Lumetri Color panel.
- Which files
- Cinematic bundle: the
.cubefiles in each look'sLuts Cubefolder, for exampleDRONE BUNDLE/OCEAN/Luts Cube. GoPro pack: the.cubefiles inLUTs by drone-luts.com (CUBE).
Apply a LUT to a clip
Unzip the download first. Double-click the
.zipon a Mac; on Windows right-click it and choose Extract All. Apps cannot read LUTs from inside a zip.Switch to the Color workspace: Window → Workspaces → Color.
Click the clip in your timeline so the Lumetri Color panel shows its settings.
Open the Creative section and choose Look → Browse….
Pick a
.cube(or.look) file. The grade appears straight away.Drag the Intensity slider under the look to dial it in; 60–80% suits most shots.
Grade a whole sequence at once
Choose File → New → Adjustment Layer and click OK.
Drag the adjustment layer from the Project panel to a track above your clips and stretch it over the part you want graded.
Select the adjustment layer and apply the look in Lumetri Color → Creative. Every clip underneath takes the grade; lower the layer's Opacity to soften it.
Log footage
Shot in D-Log, D-Log M, Protune Flat or another log profile? Convert the footage to Rec.709 first, then add the look after it. Use the conversion LUT your camera maker publishes (DJI has one for each drone); the GoPro pack also includes DJI D-Log and GoPro Protune conversion LUTs in its UTILITY folder. On normal (Rec.709) footage, skip this step.
In Premiere, put the conversion LUT in Lumetri Color → Basic Correction → Input LUT and the creative look in Creative → Look. Recent versions with colour management turned on convert many log formats automatically; if the clip already has normal contrast before you add anything, skip the Input LUT.
Troubleshooting
My LUTs do not show in the Look menu.
Check the files are in Common/LUTs/Creative (not a subfolder), then restart Premiere Pro. You can always load a file directly with Look → Browse….
Premiere says the file is not supported.
Pick a .cube or .look file. The .xmp, .lrtemplate and .dng files are Lightroom presets and do not load in Premiere.
The result looks washed out or far too contrasty.
Washed out usually means log footage without a conversion; too harsh usually means a conversion LUT on footage that was already Rec.709. See Log footage.
