How to install LUTs in Adobe After Effects

Updated · about 5 minutes

Quick answer

In After Effects, add an adjustment layer (Layer → New → Adjustment Layer), apply Effect → Utility → Apply Color LUT and pick a .cube file. Lower the layer's opacity to soften the look.

Works with
After Effects CC and later on Mac and Windows.
Which files
Cinematic bundle: the .cube files in each look's Luts Cube folder, for example DRONE BUNDLE/OCEAN/Luts Cube. GoPro pack: the .cube files in LUTs by drone-luts.com (CUBE).

Apply a LUT to the whole composition

  1. Unzip the download first. Double-click the .zip on a Mac; on Windows right-click it and choose Extract All. Apps cannot read LUTs from inside a zip.

  2. Choose Layer → New → Adjustment Layer. It covers the full comp by default.

  3. With the adjustment layer selected, choose Effect → Utility → Apply Color LUT and pick a .cube file.

  4. Press T to show the layer's Opacity and lower it to soften the look.

Or use Lumetri Color

  1. Apply Effect → Color Correction → Lumetri Color to the layer.

  2. In Effect Controls, open Creative → Look and choose Browse…, or pick a look from the list if you installed the LUTs as described in the Premiere Pro guide (both apps share the folder).

  3. Set the strength with Intensity.

Log footage

Shot in D-Log, D-Log M, Protune Flat or another log profile? Convert the footage to Rec.709 first, then add the look after it. Use the conversion LUT your camera maker publishes (DJI has one for each drone); the GoPro pack also includes DJI D-Log and GoPro Protune conversion LUTs in its UTILITY folder. On normal (Rec.709) footage, skip this step.

In After Effects, use Lumetri's Basic Correction → Input LUT for the conversion and Creative → Look for the grade, or stack two Apply Color LUT effects with the conversion first.

Troubleshooting

How do I swap to a different look?

Apply Color LUT asks for a file only when you apply it. Delete the effect and apply it again, or use Lumetri Color, which lets you change the look from a menu.
