How to install LUTs in Final Cut Pro

Updated · about 5 minutes

Quick answer

In Final Cut Pro, drag the Custom LUT effect (Effects → Color) onto a clip, then in the Video inspector choose LUT → Choose Custom LUT… and pick a .cube file or a whole folder. Final Cut keeps it in the menu for future projects.

Works with
Final Cut Pro 10.4.1 and later on Mac.
Which files
Cinematic bundle: the .cube files in each look's Luts Cube folder, for example DRONE BUNDLE/OCEAN/Luts Cube. GoPro pack: the .cube files in LUTs by drone-luts.com (CUBE).

Apply a LUT to a clip

  1. Unzip the download first. Double-click the .zip on a Mac; on Windows right-click it and choose Extract All. Apps cannot read LUTs from inside a zip.

  2. Open the Effects browser (⌘5) and go to Color → Custom LUT.

  3. Drag Custom LUT onto your clip, or select the clip and double-click the effect.

  4. Open the Video inspector (⌘4). Under Custom LUT, click the LUT pop-up menu and choose Choose Custom LUT….

  5. Select a .cube file, or select a whole folder (for example a look's Luts Cube folder) to add every LUT in it to the menu at once.

  6. Use the Mix slider in the effect to set the strength.

Keep the LUTs for future projects

Final Cut copies every LUT you choose into ~/Library/Application Support/ProApps/Custom LUTs, so they stay in the LUT pop-up menu for every project. To see or tidy them, choose Reveal in Finder from the same menu.

Apply the same look to many clips

  1. Select the clip that has the LUT and press ⌘C.

  2. Select the other clips and choose Edit → Paste Effects (⌥⌘V).

Log footage

Shot in D-Log, D-Log M, Protune Flat or another log profile? Convert the footage to Rec.709 first, then add the look after it. Use the conversion LUT your camera maker publishes (DJI has one for each drone); the GoPro pack also includes DJI D-Log and GoPro Protune conversion LUTs in its UTILITY folder. On normal (Rec.709) footage, skip this step.

In Final Cut, add two Custom LUT effects to the clip: the conversion LUT first, the look second (effects apply top to bottom in the inspector). If Final Cut already converts the clip through the Camera LUT setting in the Info inspector, you only need the look.

Troubleshooting

Final Cut will not load the file.

Choose a .cube file from the unzipped folder. The Lightroom files (.xmp, .lrtemplate, .dng) are for photos.

A LUT has vanished from the menu.

Check ~/Library/Application Support/ProApps/Custom LUTs. If the file was moved or deleted there, choose it again with Choose Custom LUT….
