How to install LUTs in DaVinci Resolve
Updated · about 5 minutes
Quick answer
In DaVinci Resolve, open Project Settings → Color Management → Lookup Tables → Open LUT Folder, copy the .cube files in and click Update Lists. Then on the Color page, drag a LUT from the LUTs panel onto a node.
- Works with
- DaVinci Resolve 17 and later, free and Studio, on Mac, Windows and Linux, and DaVinci Resolve for iPad.
- Which files
- Cinematic bundle: the
.cubefiles in each look'sLuts Cubefolder, for exampleDRONE BUNDLE/OCEAN/Luts Cube. GoPro pack: the.cubefiles inLUTs by drone-luts.com (CUBE).
Install the LUTs
Unzip the download first. Double-click the
.zipon a Mac; on Windows right-click it and choose Extract All. Apps cannot read LUTs from inside a zip.In Resolve, click the gear icon at the bottom right to open Project Settings, then go to Color Management → Lookup Tables and click Open LUT Folder.
Copy the LUTs into the folder that opens. Tip: copy each look's
Luts Cubefolder and rename it after the look (for exampleDrone LUTs – Ocean). Resolve shows each subfolder as its own group.Back in Project Settings, click Update Lists, then Save.
Apply a look
Open the Color page and select a clip.
Click LUTs at the top left to open the LUT browser and pick your Drone LUTs folder. Hover over a thumbnail and move the mouse across it to preview the look on your clip.
Drag the LUT onto a node in the node editor. Or right-click a node and choose LUT → [your folder] → [look].
Control the strength
Put the LUT on its own node (Alt+S / Option+S adds a serial node).
Open the Key palette and lower Key Output → Gain from 1.0 to around 0.6–0.8.
Grade the whole timeline
In the node editor, switch the drop-down at the top right from Clip to Timeline.
Add the LUT to a node there. It sits on top of every clip's own grade.
Alternatively, on the Edit page drag an Adjustment Clip (Effects → Toolbox → Effects) over the clips and grade that.
On iPad
Save the download to your iPad and tap the
.zipin the Files app to unzip it.Long-press the
.cubefiles (or a look'sLuts Cubefolder) and choose Copy.In Files, go to On My iPad → DaVinci Resolve → LUT, long-press an empty spot and choose Paste.
Open DaVinci Resolve, tap the gear icon, go to Color Management and tap Update Lists. The looks are now in the LUTs panel on the Color page.
Log footage
Shot in D-Log, D-Log M, Protune Flat or another log profile? Convert the footage to Rec.709 first, then add the look after it. Use the conversion LUT your camera maker publishes (DJI has one for each drone); the GoPro pack also includes DJI D-Log and GoPro Protune conversion LUTs in its UTILITY folder. On normal (Rec.709) footage, skip this step.
In Resolve, do the conversion on node 1 (a conversion LUT or a Color Space Transform effect) and put the creative look on node 2. Balance exposure and white balance on node 1 before the look.
Troubleshooting
The LUTs are not in the list.
Click Update Lists in Project Settings → Color Management, or restart Resolve. Check the files are unzipped and sit directly in the LUT folder or one subfolder level below it.
Where is the LUT folder on disk?
Mac: /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/LUT. Windows: C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\LUT (ProgramData is hidden; paste the path into File Explorer). Open LUT Folder always takes you to the right place.
Do the LUTs survive a Resolve update?
Yes. Updates keep the LUT folder.
